A message to students
Dear Students,
ENGL251 has changed because the world you are preparing to enter has changed.
Communication has always been essential to academic and professional success, but today it takes place in a workplace shaped by digital platforms, artificial intelligence, remote collaboration, multicultural teams, and rapidly changing expectations. Employers are no longer looking only for graduates who possess knowledge. They need people who can express ideas clearly, listen carefully, work effectively with others, use technology responsibly, adapt to change, and communicate with confidence and professionalism.
The renewed ENGL251 course was developed in response to this reality. Its purpose is not to replace the foundations of effective communication, but to connect them more closely to the situations you will encounter during your university studies, your job search, and your future career. The course reflects LIU's commitment to student-centered education, curricular renewal, innovation, and the development of independent learners who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to their local, regional, and global communities. It also supports the University's vision of empowering graduates to engage successfully with both career and life opportunities.
Throughout the course, you will learn how to communicate clearly and purposefully in modern professional environments. You will practise writing business emails and workplace messages; delivering positive, negative, and persuasive messages; communicating through digital media; working professionally in teams and meetings; and presenting ideas confidently. You will also develop practical career-readiness skills by preparing a professional resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, participating in job interviews, and delivering workplace presentations.
Artificial intelligence is now part of this learning experience. You will explore how AI can support brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising, research, presentation preparation, and career development. At the same time, you will learn that AI cannot replace human judgment, empathy, creativity, accuracy, or responsibility. Using AI well means questioning its output, checking information, protecting privacy, avoiding bias, maintaining your own voice, and taking responsibility for the final work you produce.
This direction is closely connected to the School of Education's emphasis on career-oriented lifelong learning, innovative digital learning, learner-centered education, and the integration of core skills within a blended digital environment. It also reflects LIU's wider values of integrity, innovation, excellence, diversity and inclusion, collaboration, compassion, and responsible stewardship.
ENGL251 is therefore more than a writing course. It is a course about how you present yourself, how you build relationships, how you collaborate, how you respond to challenges, and how you prepare for a workplace that will continue to evolve. The skills you develop here are meant to remain useful long after the semester ends.
My hope is that this course will help you become not only a stronger writer and speaker, but also a more confident, thoughtful, ethical, and adaptable professional. Technology will continue to change, but the ability to communicate with clarity, credibility, empathy, and purpose will remain deeply human - and deeply valuable.
